AUGUST 2003 Vol. 7 Issue 7 on-line version

BRUNKILD CENTENNIAL A SUCCESS

From the Wine and Cheese reception Friday night, the fun activities, fireworks and musical entertainment on Saturday, and the well-attended church service and brunch on Sunday, Brunkild celebrated its 100th birthday in style. An estimated 700-800 people took in the event.

On Friday evening guests enjoyed wine, cheese and artfully prepared snacks. Locals and those from far away had a chance to pick out who was who in old photos and relive Brunkild's past. T-shirts, mugs, recipe book/almanacs and history books were available throughout the weekend.

After a hearty pancake breakfast, everyone picked out a spot along the parade route. There were 65 entries in the parade which was led by the RCMP, including our very own Arnold Kliewer in his red serge. Families and businesses were creative in their entries with 65 floats in all.

Elsie Steinke officially dedicated the new Brunkild Consolidated School monument at the old school grounds. This was followed by an official

Centennial flag raising by Henry Stein and Arnold Kliewer Jr. at the Recreation Centre. Afternoon activities included pick up baseball, a crib tournament, and fun activities for the kids.

The delicious evening banquet was followed by entertainment provided by band members representing the musical history of Brunkild including former members of the Polka Partners, the Nomads, and the Echos. Local musician Ron Karlowksy and an excellent array of musicians provided entertainment in the beer gardens before and after a magnificent fireworks display.

Southern Comfort Revised entertained appreciative guests in the Brunkild Recreation Centre.
The next morning, delegates to the World Lutheran Federation meeting in Winnipeg, including well known to many Brunkild residents, Dr. Noko, General Secretary of the WLF, were special guests at the church service and brunch.

Appreciation is extended to the many volunteers and sponsors who made the event a success!
